Chapter Fourteen

Brad met Casey a few hours later. They sat on a park bench and ate a couple of sandwiches, drank some coffee, somewhat stunned, looking around at the detritus of what had been their wedding reception locale.

“I think all the injured have been treated and sent either home or to the ER,” remarked Brad. He took a deep gulp of coffee.

“At least the trees seem undamaged, but the flowerbeds are toast. Who on earth would blow up the town?” demanded Casey. “Who could possibly hate us that much?”

“Not the town, the old courthouse and the library, or blowing up something that used to be there. There is a pattern, it’s just out there on the fringes. I can’t settle it in my mind.”

“You realize we’re late for our own wedding rehearsal?”

“Bet your mom’s fit to be tied. Anyway, the pastor is still here and his wife, comforting people, making sure everyone’s fed. Long as he’s here, we aren’t late.”

“Mom went home to change. Once the park is all put back to order, we can get back to putting up the reception. Don’t you think a simple firebombing is going to stop this wedding,” she asserted. He squeezed her hand across the table. “I am going to marry you, mister.”

“I feel bad about leaving right now.” He put his arm around her shoulder and looked around, shaking his head. “Erick is going to have his hands full. And Homeland's coming in. Lordy, the place is going to be crawling with Feds.”

“I know. But maybe that’s just the best reason for us to go,” she paused. “We’ve been pulling a tight wire these last full months, trying to stop the nonsense going on and maybe pulling back, getting away from it all for a short time, resting our minds will give us a clearer head. Can we take pictures of the crime quilt layout with us? Maybe after the first couple days, set down somewhere and study it together, see what it means?”

“If I take my laptop and my files on the history of the town, maybe I can figure it out. Away from our regular duties, just this to think about, well, among other more interesting things, we might get a breakthrough.”

“Finally!” came almost a shout, an indignant shout. “Those deputies had us held up for hours out there, wouldn’t let us in the town.” A medium height, grey-haired lady in an overly fancy afternoon dress stood with her hands on her hips glaring at him. By her side a tall, very thin, red-haired woman, wearing a dressy green suit, red fedora and platform shoes, carrying a red clutch, stood quietly inspecting her nails. “We’re all late for the rehearsal dinner and all this soot is getting my shoes all messy!” she wailed. “Where is this church we’re supposed to be going to?”

Brad stood up. “Aunt Marge and Sis! I wondered if you’d make it!”

“Of course, we’d make it,” snapped his sister. “Your mother is in the car. Is this
